The 2014 Briar will be held in Richmond, BC. Richmond folks have a ‘merchandise offer’ ! There will be Friar’s Briar Caps at the Bonspiel this year. They are being made by Ray Howard in Victoria and have protection in the lining to save one’s head should one slip or fall and hit the ice. They will cost $45 (cash) each. If the demand surpasses the 10 being brought by Don Allen, orders will be taken and sent out afterwards. Pictures of these caps can be seen below.
For the Medals Round – Gold went to the Hautz Team, Silver to the Friesen Team and Bronze went to the Bartel Team
For the Hugh Christmas Award – the Allan Team led the Round Robin event
The Amazing Grace Trophy/Plaque (West vs East Rivalry) was won by the West this year.
Yes, word from the Registrar for the coming Briar says there will be 16 Teams competing in the coming Briar. The “But…” comes about where there were only 15 Teams registered by the middle of February. So, the Richmond planning committee has decided to ‘split’ a team (thanks to Don Allan and Dan Eagle) and try to make up the 16th team to make the schedule work.
In doing so, they are short one player each team and are calling on fellow Friars across the land to help find individual players and to contact the Registrar pronto with possible registrants. Late Fees will be waived for individuals registering accordingly. So help out the Richmond folks if you can. They thank you in advance!
Supper and Opening Ceremonies commence 5:00 pm Monday, followed by the First Draw (All Teams) at 7:00 pm and end with the Final Lunch and Awards, starting noon on Friday. The Banquet takes place at 6:00 pm on Wednesday.
Hotel rooms being held for Friars are until February 4, so you take your chances if trying to book rooms after that date.
As of January 8th, we have 12 rinks registered (but not necessarily confirmed until all team members have paid their fee!).
Which reminds one, the ‘Early Bird’ registration is $175 before January 31, 2014. Afterwards, it goes to $200!
Even if you cannot finalize your individual registration (due to unknown accommodation and travel plans at present), send in your fee beforehand to the Registrar (mail, or by credit card through the Curling Rink – see details at bottom of on-line individual registration form).
Richmond’s local planning committee is going full steam now to make the 2014 Friar’s Briar the success it has been in previous years. Thanks gang!
