Friars’ Briar Annual Meeting 2018

  1. Welcome & Opening Prayer by Dave Martin
  2. Acceptance of Minutes of March 9, 2017 AGM. Moved, Seconded, CARRIED
  3. Intro & Thanks to Local Committee. Remarks by Jerry Borkowsky. Jerry and the hosting were applauded for their wonderful hosting efforts.
  4. The report from the Board included:
    1. Recognition of Friars’ Briar Webmaster, Ken Murdoch.
    2. The amendment from the Board: “Teams eligible to play in the Friars’ Briar must have a minimum of one clergy or employee of a faith-based organization on the team, who plays in the position of skip or vice-skip. Exceptions must be cleared by the Executive on an annual basis.”
    3. Discussion – this does include employees of faith-based organizations and retired clergy.
    4. After discussion and questions, it was Moved, Seconded, CARRIED Unanimously.
  5.  Harold Hesje gave the Treasurers Report. We do have a deficit of $1,533.90 for the past year due to travel subsidies. It was Moved, Seconded, CARRIED
  6. Provincial Directors were updated as follows:

AB – Don Sjoberg 2019

MB – Ken Perrett 2020

BC – Ernie Paetsch, 2020

SK – Ron Bestvater 2021

ON – John Torrance 2023

ON – Pam Bartel 2023

7. Nominations of Friars’ Briar Officers (elected on a yearly basis).

President – David Martin willing to stand for one more term.

Vice President – Don Sjoberg not willing to move up to President.

Past President – Sieg Wall

Secretary – John Torrance

Treasurer – Harold Hesje

Historian – Ken Murdoch

Moved, Seconded, CARRIED

8. New Friars’ Briar Pins were sold for a total of $311.

9. Special Recognition

  1. It was noted that while this year is the 40th Anniversary of the founding of the Friars’ Briar started in 1978, since no spiel was held in 1979 when the Labatt’s Brier was held in Chicoutimi, QC, we can celebrate again next year.
  2. Dave reported on some Friars’ Briar Trivia and asked all those who had won in the Friars’ Briar and those who were still playing with the same team to stand and be acknowledged.
  3. The Heavenly Host Award, a friendly competition between the East (includes Ontario, Manitoba and our USA member) and West showed that the East has won this year. It is the third year in a row.
  4. The Amazing Grace Award was given to two of the Friars’ Briar spouses on behalf of the whole group of spouses who have come out regularly to watch and support their spouses’ teams. Elaine Hesje and Veronica Kiesman were given the plaque.
  5. President’s Challenge Award Announcement. Dave Martin announced that the ‘Holy Hosts,’ our Regina hosts, won this award and he would be buying this team drinks the next day for the most raise takeouts.
  6. Other Awards Given:

    39 Consecutive years in curling at the Friars’ Briar – Fraser Muldrew

    Fashion Award for his orange shoes – Bill Kiesman.

    g.  Martin Carrol was given a standing ovation for marking the 50-year anniversary of his ordination.

10. Memorials – The Board was not aware of any deaths in the last year. However Laverne Hautz spoke about Harold Ziprick from Calgary who passed away in December 2017.

11. 2019 Friars’ Briar Announcement

  1. Dennis Butcher spoke of the Winnipeg Chaplains’ Curling Club’s offer to host the 2019 event in Winnipeg.
  2.  2019 Friars’ Briar dates were discussed due to the Brier falling during the week of Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. It was moved to have the event a week earlier on February 25 to March 1, 2019. Moved, Seconded, CARRIED.
