8. Proposed Amendments to Friars’ Briar Constitution
a. Proposed amendment to Article 5.8 of the constitution – Addition of Item (b) Past President:
Moved by David Martin, seconded by Susan Wilson, that the Past President be included on the Executive. Carried.
The Board of Directors shall now consist of:

ii. Past President
iii. Vice-President;
iv. Secretary;
v. Treasurer;
vi. Historian.
b. Proposed addition to Article 5 of the constitution – addition of 5.10 to clarify terms of officers: Officers of the Friars’ Briar will serve for one year terms, renewable annually.

c. Proposed amendment to Article 8.4 of the constitution:
Original: “8.4 A rink eligible to play in a FB must be Skipped by a FBA member who is a clergy person (It is preferable, but not essential, that all members of a Rink shall be from the same Province as the Skip)”
Changed to read: “8.4 A rink eligible to play in the FB must be skipped by a FBA member who is a clergy person (active or retired) or an employee of a faith based organization (active or retired). It is preferable, but not essential, that all members of a Rink shall be from the same Province as the Skip”

9. Treasurers Report: Dan Skaret explained the report as printed. As of Jan 31, 2015, the balance was $3985.82

10. Questions for discussion re. the Future Health of the Friar’s Briar. David explained the paper and people discussed it in groups.
a. Should we be encouraging more lay participation?
– Yes, definitely
– more than one lay person should be allowed on a curling team at the Briar
– clergy can invite people who are members of a secular team they are members of
b. What other strategies can be used to promote clergy curling?
– advertise in local newspapers for clergy curling
– report on the Friars Briar in local newspapers
– clergy might form a team within a local secular curling club
– appeal to local ministerials for more members
– open a club up to interfaith, including rabbis and imams
– special introductory registration rates in clubs
– In Website, offer tour options and pre-purchase tickets to the Men’s Briar
– Wear clergy collars and have the Friars Briar on local TV
c. How do we invite people?
– encourage clergy who are about to retire to join a club
– a problem is that clergy can’t get time off
– flexibility in who plays what position on a team, except for skip.
– “learn to curl” event each year in a local club
– at the Friars Briar, costs should be reported up front in registration, including travel subsidy
d. How do we increase sponsorships?
– perhaps appeal to the United Way or other service clubs, and funeral homes
– should do more promotion in churches
11. Amazing Grace Award – was presented to Pam Bartell, the youngest curler at the Briar.
12. Heavenly Host Trophy will be presented at Friday’s lunch
13. President’s Challenge – the Burton Team scored the most double takeouts.
14. Memorials: It was noted that the following former participants in the Friars’ Briar have died within the past year:
a. Rod Booth
b. Ross Conal. Dan Eagle described the late Ross Conal, who served with the United Church of Canada for 40 years in several British Columbia churches. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion and the Scouting movement, and a fisherman, woodworker, avid curler and lawn bowler.
c. Isaac Balzer. Ron Wegner described Isaac Balzer, who worked for CN, was a church layman, Christian Service Brigade member, and on the board of the Gospel Message Radio. He participated in short term mission trips with his wife Elsie. Family was very special to him.
d. Esther Grant. Harold Hesje described Esther Grant, who was a Registered Nurse, and nursing manager of a nursing home. She curled with Harold in several Friars’ Briars
15. 2016 Friars’ Briar – David Martin asked for a straw poll to have the Friars’ Briar held at the Hunt Club in Ottawa, March 7-11, and there was enthusiastic agreement.
16. David Martin asked for a straw poll to have more lay people involved in the Friars Briar, and again there was enthusiastic agreement.
17. Adjournment was called for at 9:30 p.m.
